Calls have been made for Newport City Council to back Welsh farmers instead of importing chicken from abroad for school dinners.
Natasha Asghar MS believes the local authority must review its processes immediately and use local produce within the area’s schools.
The South Wales East politician’s call came as it was revealed sourced 35% of chicken from Thailand and 18% from China, which is used as part of school meals.
Natasha Asghar MS said:
“We have some fantastic farmers right on our doorstep, producing high-quality local food and we should be supporting them at every available opportunity.
“Instead of buying chicken from countries like China and Thailand, Newport City Council should be looking closer to home and backing Welsh farming.
“Newport isn’t the only local authority importing chicken from overseas, so the Welsh Labour Government certainly has a role to play here in making sure public money is spent wisely.”
