A learning programme aimed at supporting 16–19-year-olds in Newport who are not in education, employments or training, has been hailed a huge success by the area’s Member of the Senedd.
Natasha Asghar, who represents South Wales East in the Welsh Parliament, headed to Newport Youth Academy this week to meet with students and staff to find out more about the project.
It was also an opportunity for Natasha to meet with staff from Adult Learning Wales and students who are currently enrolled on their Youth Work course at the Ringland hub.
Natasha chatted with the future youth workers about their coursework, work placements, and future ambitions before giving them a taste of what her role as a Member of the Welsh Parliament entails.
Newport Youth Academy, which currently has 105 students enrolled, provides young people with the chance to achieve their career goals, gain professional qualifications, and get paid up to £60 a week.
Natasha Asghar MS said: “It is clear this fantastic initiative is helping to improve the lives of many young people in Newport.
“The joint working between Newport Youth Academy, Adult Learning Wales, and other key stakeholders, is delivering big benefits to these young people, who would otherwise not be learning and developing.
“I take my hat off to all those involved in this fantastic initiative, and it would be great to see more of these projects developed across my region to reach more young people.”
