Green-fingered allotment holders in Blackwood showcased their impressive plans for the future with their Member of the Welsh Parliament, Natasha Asghar MS, recently.
The South Wales East politician met with the Lewis Street Allotment Association to discuss their plans take over the allotments from Caerphilly Council to ensure long-term security and unlock exciting expansion plans.
The Association is in the process of securing a 25-year long lease – instead of the current 1-year rolling set up – by going through a Community Asset Transfer process.
It’s hoped the move will protect and enhance the allotment, which was founded in 1934, for future generations.
The Association is also working to become a Community Incorporated Organisation, which will allow the association to plan, implement new community outreach activities and crucially, apply for much needed capital infrastructure investment.
These steps would allow the Association to develop exciting plans such as introducing accessible and starter plots, creating a wild meadow area, launching a hub where surplus produce can be offered to residents, and creating a space for people to come together.
Natasha Asghar MS said:
“It was an absolute pleasure to meet with members of the Lewis Street Allotment Association and discuss their ambitious plans for the future.
“It’s clear this allotment, which has been in the area for nearly 100 years, is a much-loved and much-used site and I applaud the association’s efforts in making sure it not only survives but thrives.
“I look forward to working closely with the Association as members embark on this exciting new chapter.”
