Much-needed litter picking equipment has been handed over to a Newport charity, which recently had £5,000 worth of kit stolen.
Thieves stole a range of equipment from Pride in Pill’s lock-up recently, which prevented the charity from carrying out its vital work in the community.
After hearing of Pride in Pill’s situation, Natasha Asghar MS launched a public appeal for donations to help the charity get back on its feet.
Generous residents and businesses from across Newport donated in their droves, and the equipment – including litter pickers, hi-vis jackets, and gloves - was this week handed over to Pride in Pill’s Paul Murphy MBE.
Natasha Asghar MS, Member of the Welsh Parliament for South Wales East said:
“Pride in Pill does such great work across the city and it was heartbreaking to see their efforts put back by mindless thieves, so I felt like I had to do something to support this wonderful group.
“The generosity shown by many in response to my appeal for donations has been staggering and I want to say thank you to everyone who donated, in particular local business F.J Barrett and Son for donating several of their Barrett’s Gripper devices.
“This is a fantastic example of the community pulling together to support a good cause and I can’t wait to see the dedicated Pride in Pill volunteers back out in our community.”
Paul Murphy MBE, Chairman of Pride in Pill added:
“After what has been an incredibly difficult time for Pride in Pill, this has been a real tonic, seeing the community rally behind us.
“As a group we will never be able to thank all those who donated enough, and we are incredibly grateful to Natasha Asghar MS for organising this public appeal.
“Thanks to the generosity of the people of Newport, we can get back out in communities across the city doing what we love.”
