Students at Coleg Gwent gave Natasha Asghar MS a glimpse into their studies and life at college.

Natasha, who represents South Wales East in the Welsh Parliament, visited the Newport campus to meet with Coleg Gwent’s new principal and Chief Executive Nicola Gamlin.

It was also an opportunity for Natasha, who is Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Education, to tour the facility and meet some of the college’s students.

Natasha sat in on an English for Speakers of Other Languages course and chatted with students before meeting some of Coleg Gwent’s hair and beauty learners.

Staff then took Natasha to see the college’s construction workshops and bricklaying area.

Natasha was particularly pleased to hear of the major growth the college has seen when it comes to women studying construction.

During the tour, Natasha and the Principal also discussed the mental health support on offer, provisions for ALN students, working with local businesses and apprenticeships,

Natasha Asghar MS said:

“Visiting lots of different departments and meeting a range of students was hugely beneficial for me as Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Education.

“Coleg Gwent is a fantastic example of how students’ ambitions and talents are nurtured and developed in their chosen fields.

“All of the students I spoke with were full of enthusiasm for their work and they were really throwing themselves into their vocational courses, which is, without a doubt, testament to the college’s brilliant staff.

“It was a pleasure to meet the new principal Nicola Gamlin, and I am looking forward to working with Coleg Gwent going forward.”
