Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Education and South Wales East Senedd Member, Natasha Asghar MS, met with Professor Rachael Langford, Vice Chancellor of Cardiff Met University, to discuss the challenges faced by the higher education sector in Wales.
Following a number of recent announcements about the precarious state of university finances, Professor Langford and her colleagues outlined their vision to retain a strong and competitive presence in the Welsh capital offering a wide range of courses.
Positive examples of collaborations with neighbouring local universities and Cardiff and Vale University Health Board on various projects were highlighted as success stories, which could serve as blueprints for other institutions to benefit from.
Commenting after the meeting, Natasha said:
“It was immensely reassuring to see a university with such a positive, can-do attitude, led by Professor Langford, who is such an inspirational leader.
“Like other higher education institutions, there are some tough decisions ahead, but I am confident that Rachael and her team will meet them head-on.
“It is vital that higher education, further education, and the Welsh Government work closely together to ensure that skills gaps are identified, and suitable courses are developed to meet these needs.
“Whether it be teacher training, allied healthcare professions, or sport, Cardiff Met has a long and proud record and has taught many graduates who have excelled in their chosen fields. I have every confidence, following my meeting, that Cardiff Met will continue to be one of Wales’ top educational institutions.”
